Wide Range of Water Pumps

A pump is a device that gives pressure or speed to a liquid, causing it to move. There are different types of water pumps, each with their own specifications and uses:

  • A booster pump automatically turns on and off depending on water demand, making it suitable for various applications.
  • A pressure booster is the ideal solution when your water pressure is too low, which can be annoying when showering.
  • A rainwater pump is perfect for reusing rainwater for various purposes.
  • An irrigation pump is designed to water your garden or lawn during dry periods using water from an external source.
  • A submersible pump is placed underwater to remove clean or dirty water, such as in a basement or a swimming pool.
  • A circulation pump is found in heating systems, where it circulates hot water.

How Does a Rainwater System Work?

A rainwater system collects rainwater through gutters and downspouts into an underground tank, well, or reservoir. Before and after, rainwater filters block unwanted contaminants and odors. Do you need water that doesn't come into (in)direct contact with your body? By turning on the tap or activating the device, you switch on your rainwater pump. It delivers the collected rainwater wherever you need it. The pump itself or a separate rainwater float indicates when the tank is empty. With a rainwater pump with automatic switch-over, the system automatically switches to mains water when needed.

Buying a Water Pump: Uses and Benefits

With a rainwater pump, you can reuse rainwater around and in your home. Think about watering your garden during dry periods, washing your car, flushing your toilet, using your washing machine, or cleaning your house. This way, a water pump offers you many benefits:

  • You reduce water waste.
  • You have a free source of water.
  • Lime-free rainwater is better for your plumbing and electrical appliances.

The rainwater pump you need depends partly on its use. If you only reuse rainwater for watering your garden, a simpler model may suffice. Do you also use rainwater to run your washing machine and wash your car? Then you need a sturdier rainwater pump.

Wet vs. Dry Installation

Based on their setup, we distinguish two main types of water pumps. In a wet installation, your pump is submerged in water. This type doesn't need extra space and doesn't cause noise pollution; the vibrations are dampened by the water. Submersible pumps are an example of wet water pumps. They often feature flat suction, removing water completely from the surface where they're installed.

An alternative to wet installation is dry installation. Your rainwater pump is placed outside the reservoir and sucks up the water through a hose. This requires extra space and you need to consider operating noise. However, they are cheaper to buy and easier to maintain. Booster pumps are the water pumps most commonly installed dry.

Installing Your Rainwater Pump Yourself

Not born with a screwdriver and wrench in hand? Even then, installing a rainwater pump is a doable task. The exact procedure varies depending on the type of pump, the installation, and the application. Here are some general tips:

  • Read the manual: It usually gives you a lot of useful information about your pump and its installation. Enter the name of your pump on the Grundfos website to quickly find the manual for your device.
  • For dry installation, place your pump on a solid, horizontal surface. For wet installation, attach a rope or cable to the handle provided. Lower your pump into your rainwater tank and ensure at least 1 meter distance from the bottom.
  • Pay extra attention to the connections of the suction pipe (which draws water) and the discharge pipe (which distributes the water). Consider the maximum height difference the pump can handle in both directions.
  • Don't forget to include your filters in your system and possibly set up a float that indicates when the rainwater tank is almost empty. Some submersible pumps have a built-in float, but you can also find separate ones in our webshop.
  • After installation, start your pump and open a tap connected to it. Wait a few minutes until the water flows and let it run for a while to remove any air from the pipes.
